Learning Sequence 3

  • Gather a range of fiction and non-fiction books of stories about people who've had a long journey to achieve great feats, eg autobiographies and biographies. Examples of people to study are:

    • Kath Walker, Charles Perkins, Ernie Dingo, Aaron Pedersen, Linda Burney, Aiden Ridgeway, Betty Cuthbert, Michael Milton

    • inventors, writers, musicians, celebrities, sports persons.

  • Choose a text and model a report on the main character. Include the following:

    • who it is about

    • their major goal and the smaller steps

    • the obstacles they encountered

    • who helped them or supported them.

  • Students independently write a report on a person of their choice.

  • Students present their report. It can be in the form of an oral presentation, PowerPoint presentation, role-play as the person highlighting their perseverance qualities. Amend the brainstorm list if appropriate. Click here to see classroom display. Students write in their journals the qualities and personal traits that are evident in the person in their book study. They reflect on what makes/made them persevere and check against the previous list compiled at the beginning of the unit. Students suggest amendments to the brainstorm list from Learning sequence 1.
