Case Management

St.Catherine's

8. Case Development

Many students have difficulty in developing a coherent, logical argument and substantiating it with evidence. This is a critical skill for success in essay writing in many subjects for the HSC. It is also a fundamental skill for many tertiary studies and for many careers.  At present at St Catherines it is taught and practised as a separate skill only for those students involved in debating or Mock Trial.  By introducing it as a generic skill to be explicitly taught and assessed in a number of subjects, we expect to facilitate all students capacity to formulate a coherent argument.

Case Development: Teaching in the Junior School

Case development will be introduced in Stage 3 with the teaching of debating. Teachers of Years 5 & 6 are asked to give their students practice in developing a case line in relation to topics of study in HSIE, English and Science.  The skill will be developed orally initially on the teaching or exposition text type.
