Interviews

What questions should I ask when interviewing students about the strategies that they have used?

Interviewing the student about how answers were obtained will provide information about the strategies that the student employed. The following are examples of questions or instructions that the teacher might use when interviewing students:

  • What was the problem or task about?
  • How have you organised the information?
  • How did you estimate your answer?
  • What steps did you take?
  • Show me what you did.
  • Which step did you do first?
  • Which step came next?
  • How did you check the steps that you took to get your answer?
  • How did you check your answer?
  • Was your answer close to your estimate?
  • Would another recording method work as well or better?
  • What else did you try?
  • Give me another example of a problem like this one.
  • How would you explain this process to a younger student?
  • What was one thing you learned?
  • What kinds of problems are still difficult for you?
